Golden Syrian hamsters (HsdHan®:AURA) were used in a recent FDA study to examine key COVID-19 issues, such as the impact of age on disease progression, the relationship between virus dose and disease severity, and whether recovered animals develop post-infection immunity.

Study data suggested that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can induce immunological memory that protects against re-infection and transmission. In addition, the study demonstrated the effectiveness of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222) vaccine against clinical disease caused by the B.1.1.7. and B.1.351 variants.
